State Sponsorship or Family Nomination (176/886)
State Sponsorship - State Migration Plans
It is now a Schedule 1 (validity / time of application) criteria to have been granted state sponsorship prior to lodging your 886 application. It is no longer possible to apply for an 885 visa and then "upgrade" to an 886.
The General Skills Migration program is prioritizing those applicants who have skills that are in demand. Applicants who have State Sponsorship are processed faster as their skills tend to be in high demand. Applicants with State Sponsorship get 5 additional points on the Points Test.
Some States charge you to apply for State Sponsorship, others require you to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to relocate to the State, typically this is $25,000 for a single and up to $50,000 for a family.
State sponsorship also requires a solid knowledge of the state that you will be moving to as you are expected to live in that state if they accept you for nomination.
