Points Test

General Skills Migration is based on the Points Test. You can score points in one section of each category. (ie you don't get 15 points for Competent English AND 25 points for Proficient English if your IELTS score is 7.5 you just just score 25 Points.)

 

Currently the pass mark is 120 points for skilled - independent (175/885) and 100 points for skilled - sponsorship (176/886).

 

There is a mandatory work requirement. You must have worked in a skilled occupation for 12 months in the past 24 months. The mandatory work requirement is at the time of application. Overseas students are exempt from this requirement if they satisfy the 2 years study requirement and apply within 6 months of becoming eligible.

Skilled Occupation

 

  • 60 Points - Professional Occupations requiring Job Specific degrees or trades.
  • 50 Points - Associate Professionals or generalist occupations, usually requiring a degree.
  • 40 Points - Occupations requiring Diplomas or Advanced Diploma

 

Applicants must be under 45 at time of application.

 

  • 30 Points age 18 to 29
  • 25 Points age 30 to 34
  • 20 Points age 35 to 39
  • 15 Points age 40 to 44

 

Under 18 and over 44 get zero points (Provisional visa holders)

 

English Language

 

  • 15 Points - Competent English

    IELTS Test Result (6.0 in each of four tests)

    OET Test Result equivalent to IELTS.

    Applicant with Passport from UK, USA, Ireland, Canada or NZ.

 

  • 25 Points - Proficient English

    IELTS Test Result (7.0 in each of four tests)

 

Specific Employment Experience

 

  • 10 Points - Nominated Occupation is worth 60 Points and have 3 of the past 4 years working in that nominated skill or a closely related skill.
  • 5 Points - Nominated Occupation is worth 40, 50 or 60 Points and have worked for 3 of the past 4 years in ANY skilled occupation.

 

Australian Work Experience

 

  • 10 Points - Employed in Australia for at least 1 year in the last 4 years in their nominated skilled occupation or closely related skilled occupation.
  • 10 Points - Applicants who completed a "Professional Year" in their nominated skilled occupation or closely related skilled occupation in 1 year in the last 4 years.

 

Australian Education

 

  • 25 Points - Completing a Doctorate following 2 years of academic study.
  • 15 Points - Completing a Bachelors Degree with Second Class Honors with at least 3 Academic Years.
  • 15 Points - Completing a Masters degree following an Australian Degree with at least 3 Academic Years.
  • 5 Points - Completing a Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Degree, Masters or Trade Qualification in Australia.

 

Designated Language

 

  • 5 Points - Completing a degree (or higher) equivalent in a designated foreign language.
  • 5 Points - Passing NAATI Level 3 interpreter or translator test in a "designated language"

 

Study in Regional Area

 

  • 5 Points - Obtaining a qualification and satisfying the 2 year study test in regional Australia.

 

Partner Skills

 

  • 5 Points - Spouses of main applicant (including de facto and same-sex) who meet the age, skill and language criteria. To qualify, spouse must have skills assessment (prior to application) and IELTS results.
